Family History

Joseph Martin was born in 1896 at Eastwood and was the son of Ezekiel a coal miner loader and Annie Elizabeth Martin née Stirland of 86 Heath Road Holmewood Chesterfield Derbyshire. His father Ezekiel was born in 1871 at Eastwood, his mother Annie Elizabeth Stirland was born in 1874 also at Eastwood, they were married on 24th December 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had the following children, John Purdy b1893, William b1895, Joseph b1896, Lucy b1898, Mary Elizabeth b1901, Ruth b1905, Seth b1907 all were born in Eastwood, their final children Elsie Mildred was born in 1910 at Holmewood and Dian was born in 1916 at Chesterfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Harwick Street, Holmewood, Chesterfield and were shown as Ezekiel 40 yrs a coal miner loader he is living with his wife Annie Elizabeth 39 yrs and their children, John Purdy 18 yrs a coal miner pony driver, William 16 yrs a coal miner below ground, Joseph 15 yrs a coal miner below ground, Lucy 13 yrs working at home, Mary Elizabeth 10 yrs a scholar, Seth 4 yrs and Elsie Mildred 3 months old.

Military History

Private Joseph Martin enlisted at Clay Cross whilst residing at Holmewood, he served with the 8th battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 15th July 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
