William Johnson Hart was born in 1899 at Eastwood and was the son of Edward a coal miner hewer and Jenny Hart née Scott of 311 Nottingham Road, Hill Top, Eastwood. His father Edward was born in 1869 at Keyworth, his mother Jenny Scott was born in 1873 at Ramsey, Huntingdon, they were married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, Robert b1894 Eastwood, Edwin b1897 Eastwood, William b1899 Eastwood and Ada b1903 Greasley. In the 1911 census the family are living at Lynn Croft, Eastwood and are shown as Edward 42 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Jenny 38 yrs and their children, Robert 17 yrs an outfitters assistant, Edwin 14 yrs a grocers assistant, William 11 yrs a scholar and Ada 8 yrs of age.
Private William Johnson Hart enlisted on 13th May 1917 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 18 yrs and 1 month, he gave his address as Nottingham Road, Hill Top, Eastwood he stated he was a boot repairer, posted to the reserves he was called up on 12th June 1917. He embarked from Folkstone on 31st March 1918 landing the following day at Boulogne, he was posted to the 1/8th battalion Durham Light Infantry on 2nd April 1918. He was killed in action on 10th April 1918 having no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial panel 8-9
