Thomas Bilbey was born in 1889 at Eastwood and was the son of Thomas a coal miner and Catherine Bilbey née Vickers of 48 Ebenezer Street Langley Mill Derbyshire. His father Thomas was born in 1861 at Cropwell Butler, his mother Catherine Vickers was born in 1859 at Brinsley, they were married in 1879 and had the following children, Mary Alice b1881, Thomas b1884, Mabel b1888, William b1889, Ruth b1890, George b1893, Elizabeth b1895, Margaret b 1898, Richard b1899 and Abel b1901 all were born at Eastwood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 48 Ebenezer Street, Langley Mill and are shown as Thomas 48 yrs a coal miner below ground, he is living with his wife Catherine 49 yrs and their children Mary Alice Guest 30 yrs (shown as a married daughter) William 21 yrs a coal miner below ground, Margaret 13 yrs a scholar, Richard 12 yrs a scholar and Abel 10 yrs a scholar.
Private William Bilbey enlisted on 12th September 1914 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 25 yrs and 123 days, he stated he was a coal miner loader and his next of kin was his father Thomas of 48 Ebenezer Street, Langley Mill. He was transferred to the East Yorkshire Regiment on 7th October 1914 and landed in France on 9th September 1915. He was killed in action on 26th September 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
