Family History

Samuel Berry was born in 1895 the son of Samuel a coal miner hewer and Sarah Berry née Cook of 18 Forest Street Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire. He was the brother of Herbert, Samuel, Elizabeth, Mabel, Thomas, Elsie, William, Florence, May, Peter, Winifred and Frederick Berry. Samuel was born in 1867 at Ruddington, Sarah Cook was born in 1872 at Wilford, married in 1893 at Mansfield they had 11 children. In 1911 the family were living at Forest Street, Sutton in Ashfield, Samuel gives his age as 41 yrs and is a coal miner hewer, Samuel is a colliery banks man below ground and George is also a colliery banksman below ground.

Military History

Private Samuel Berry enlisted at Newark, Nottinghamshire. He was killed in action, 26th August 1918, whilst serving in the line near Gorre, France. Buried : Fouquieres Churchyard Extension, France. Plot 4. Row E. Grave 6.

His brother Private George Berry enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield, served with the Leicestershire Regiment he was killed in action on 25th January 1916 and is buried at Bienvillers Military Cemetery
