Claud Wilfred Barratt

Also Claude, also Wilfrid, also BARRETT Claud Wilfred was the son of Henry and Jane Barratt nee Simpson. His father was born in Hood Newton, Northamptonshire, on 13 February 1869 and his mother in Eastwood. They were married in 1890 (A/M/J Bingham) and had eleven children of whom only nine survived infancy/childhood. Their nine surviving children were: Claud Wilfred b. 1890 (O/N/D Basford), Mabel Annie birth registered 1892 (J/F/M Basford), Lily birth registered 1895 (J/F/M Basford), Arthur birth registerd 1897 (J/F/M Basford), Harry b. 1899 (J/A/S Basford), Gerty b. 1901 (A/M/J Basford), Ivy b. 5 March 1903 (A/M/J Basford), Grace Elizabeth b. 1905 (J/A/S Basford) and Gladys b. 1908 (O/N/D Nottingham). All the children were born in Eastwood apart from the youngest, Gladys, who was born in Nottingham. In 1891 Henry (22) a coal miner, and Jane (23) were living on Scargill Street, Eastwood, with their son Claud (u/1). Also in the household was Jane's brother, Joseph Simpson (17 b. Keyworth) an agricultural worker. By 1901 they were living at 28 Princes Street, Eastwood. Henry and Jane now had five children: Claud (10), Mabel (9), Lily (6), Arthur (4) and Harry (1). The family had moved to Nottingham by 1908 when the youngest child, Gladys, was born and in 1911 were living at 27 Devon Street, Nottingham. Henry (42) was still working as a coal miner as was his son Claud (20). Mabel (19) and Lily (16) were both machinists in a factory and Arthur (14) was also working in a factory. The other children were either at school or under school age: Harry (11), Gerty (9), Ivy (8), Grace (5) and Gladys (2). The notice of Claud's death placed by the family in the local paper in 1917 has the wording 'brother, sisters' - it is likely that Harry, the youngest of the three brothers, died in 1915 (J/F/M Nottingham) aged 15. Claud was engaged to Lottie at the time of his death. Claud's parents were still living at 27 Devon Street, Nottingham, at the time the CWGC record was compiled. Jane Barratt may have died in 1930 (O/N/D Nottingham). Henry Barratt was living at 26 Springfield Road, Hucknall, at the time the 1939 England & Wales Register was compiled. He was living with his married daughter Ivy Richardson, an assistant overlooker (hosiery), and her husband Charles H Richardson (b. 6 May 1901), an Air Ministry warden. Ivy and Charles had married in 1925 (A/M/J Nottingham). Henry probably died in 1951 (J/F/M Nottingham).
