William Beet was born in 1883 at Granby and was the son of James a limestone quarryman and Sarah Beet née Gilbert, of Granby, Nottingham. His father James was born in 1863 at Granby and his mother Sarah Gilbert was born in 1861 at Corby, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Grantham Registration District, they went on to have 5 children , sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children, all born in Granby were , William b1883, George Richard b1886, Ethel b1888 and Alfred b1893. In the 1911 census the family are livng at Granby village and are shown as James 48 yrs a limestone quarryman, he is living with his wife Sarah 50 yrs and their children William 28 yrs a quarryman and Alfred 18 yrs a farmers lad assisting with the horses.
Private William Beet enlisted at Derby and served with the 4th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 1st August 1916 and s buried at Caberet Rouge Cemetery Souchez (grave ref IV.B/6)
Hs brother Private Alfred Beet enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 7th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he landed in France on 20th August 1915 and was killed in action on 7th August 1917 , having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium. His brother George Richard Beet also served during the Great War, he attested on 26th November 1915 at Newark, he gave his age as 30 yrs and 6 months and was working as a storeman in a Quarry. He posted to the reserves and Mobilised for war on 15th May 1918 at Derby where he was posted to the 3rd Battalion Sherwood Foresters. He later served with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and saw service in Italy from 28th August 1918 until 12th January 1919 when he was returned to England for demobilisation. He was demobilised on 9th February 1919 and place in Class Z Army Reserves.
