Family History

George Middleton was born in 1893 at Edmonton, London, he was the son of William Middleton a green grocer and his wife Sarah Ann Middleton née Andrews. William was born in 1859 at Tollerton, Sarah Ann Andrews was born in 1862 at Kennington, London, they were married on 30th October 1881 at St Mary’s Church, Lambeth, they went on to have 10 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings were living at 34 The Avenue, Chingford, London, William 52 yrs is a green grocer, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 49 yrs and their children, Edith 20 yrs, Arthur 14 yrs, Harry 12 yrs and Lucy 7 yrs of age. When George was born William lived in London where he worked as a Brewers Drayman in Edmonton and then a Greengrocer in Chingford. By 1915 when George was 18 the Middleton family had moved back to Nottinghamshire and lived at 13 Gripps Cottages off Owthorpe Road.

Military History

2nd Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers returned from India and arrived at Portland just after the outbreak of WW1. George landed in Rouen, France on or about 13 August 1914 where his Battalion was to be employed as Lines of Communications Troops under command of the 19th Independent Brigade attached to 6th Division. The Brigade remained as Lines of Communication Troops until 31 May 1915, one day after George died.While he was not involved in any particular battle at the time of his death war diaries do show that many casualties occurred at that time due to sniping and shell fire in the area of Armentieres where George was serving.
