John Edward Carrington was born in 1897 he was the son of Frederick a farm labourer and Sarah Carrington née Thornton and the brother of Frederick, William Henry, Sarah Ellen, Thomas, Herbert, Harriet Eliza, Gertrude Alice and Hilda Carrington. Frederick was born in 1867 at Bottesford, Sarah Thornton was born in 1868 at Aslockton, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham registration district, they went on to have 9 children. In 1911 they lived at Shepherd Houses Cotgrave Nottinghamshire Frederick is 44 yrs and a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah 43 yrs and eight of their children,
He enlisted on 23 Feb 1916 at the age of 18. He was immediately placed on the Army Reserve. In May 2018 John undertook a medical when he was mobilised and this showed him to be fit and healthy young man just short of his 21st birthday. On 18 September 1918, after training, John travelled from Dover to Calais where he joined the 1/4th Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment on 23 Sep. At that time his battalion was part of the 46th North Midlands Division. Just two weeks later he was killed in action on 8 October and his grave is in Montbrehain British Cemetery close to Cambrai. The battle for Montbrehain was one of the attacks on the German Hindenburg line and was mainly fought by the Australian and Canadian Divisions with the 46th (Lincolnshire and Leicestershire) Division on the flank. It is most likely that John died during this battle, which is often thought of as unnecessary. John’s estate amounted to £4 exactly and was sent to his father Fredrick in February 1919.
