Geoffrey was born in 1898 in Carlton Le Moorland a small Linconshire village just outside Newark the son of William Edward a farmer and Mary Brocklebank (née Brown.) William had been born in 1863 in Carlton, Mary in 1863 in South Carlton. They were married in Newark in 1885 and had 7 children, :- Mary Ethel b.1888 , Carwell b.1890, Margaret Ellen b.1892, Mary b.1895 , Wiliam E b.1897, Geoffrey b.1898 and Eleanor b.1902. In the 1901 census the family are living at Carlton Le Moor , William is a farmer aged 43 yrs and is living with his wife Mary and their children, Carwell , Margaret, Mary, William E, and Geoffrey. He is employing 4 servants on the farm , a private governess, a nurse , a cook and a housemaid. By the 1911 census , the family was still living in Carlton a new daughter Eleanor. They employed a housemaid and a cook. Geoffrey was at boarding school in Newark in 1911
Geoffrey enlisted at Lincoln serving first with 28th Battalion Royal Fusiliers with service number 11504 later transferring to 9th (service)Bn Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) in 'C' Company. He died of wounds on 28th February 1917 and is buried in Faubourg D'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France. Grave reference II E 4
The following is an extract from the Magnus School, Newark , diary of the Great War :- Wednesday 28 February 1917: The Brocklebanks of Carlton-le-Moorland suffered their second bereavement of the War. Private 52909 Geoffrey Brocklebank, 19, was killed while fighting with the 9th Battalion Royal Fusiliers, and is remembered in the Faubourg-d'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, and on the Magnus War Memorial. The Old Magnusian was the son of farmer William and Mary, whose nephew Trooper Joseph Hugh Turner Brocklebank, only son of farmer Joseph Brocklebank of Carlton-le-Moorland Grange, was one of 23 killed when the Mercian carrying Lincolnshire Yeomanry reinforcements through the Mediterranean to Turkey was attacked by a submarine. Trooper 1834 Brocklebank is remembered on the Helles Memorial.
