James John Whitelock (junior) was born in 1884 at Erith Kent and was the son of James John (senior) a china and hardware dealer and Amelia Whitelock née Peyto of 25 Friday Road Erith Kent. His father James John (senior) was born in 1863 at Stonehouse, Devon and his mother Amelia Peyto was born in 1861 at Bexley Heath, Kent, they were married in 1882 at the Strand and went on to have 5 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, James John b1884, Amelia Mary b1887, George b1890 and Grace b1894 all were born at Erith. In the 1911 census the family are living at 47 Pier Road, Erith, Kent and are shown as James John Whitelock 48 yrs a china and hardware dealer, he is living with his wife Amelia 50 yrs and their children James John 27 yrs an iron moulder, Amelia Mary 24 yrs helping at home, George 21 yrs a ship wright and Grace 17 yrs a student.
Lance Corporal James John Whitelock enlisted at Newark on 29th August 1914, he gave his age as 30 yrs and 180 days, he gave his occupation as that of a moulder, he was living at 3 Vernon Street, Newark, his next of kin was his father James John of 12 South Road, Erith, Kent. He was posted to the Lincolnshire Regiment. On 12th September he was posted to the 6th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment and on 1st July 1915 landed in the Dardanelles, Gallipoli. He was appointed to acting lance corporal on 8th August 1915 and was reported missing in action on 9th August 1915 and later confirmed killed in action on that date. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli.
