Arthur White was born in 1886 at Weston and was the son of Joseph a farm labourer and Louisa White née Scatcherd of 32 Portland Street, Newark. His father Joseph was born in 1861 at Weston and his mother Louisa Elizabeth Scatcherd born 1852 Swinderby they were married in 1875 at Newark and went on to have the following children, George William b1876, Henry b1877, Joseph b1882, Mildred b1885, Arthur b1886, Louisa Elizabeth b1889, William b1891, and Albert b1895 all were born in Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 30 Portland Street, Newark and are shown as Joseph 50 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Louisa 59 yrs and their children, Arthur 25 yrs a farm labourer, William 20 yrs a woodyard labourer, Albert 15 yrs a labourer.
Private Arthur White enlisted at Newark in August 1914 and served with the 1/6th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment. He landed in France in July 1915.Badly gassed and admitted to hospital on the 22nd May 1918 and developed pneumonia, passed away peacefully on 31st May. He is buried at Pernes British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published in the Newark Advertiser on 19th June 1918 :- Son of Joseph & Louisa White, 32 Portland Street, Newark. He attended Christ Church School and was afterwards employed at the gas works. When war broke out he joined the South Staffordshire Regiment in August 1914. Went to France in July 1915. Badly gassed and admitted to hospital on the 22nd May 1918 and developed pneumonia, passed away peacefully on 31st May. His eldest brother Sgt. George White, who has been gassed, has been discharged from the army. Three other brothers are serving: Signaller Joseph White, R.E., in Mesopotamia, Sapper William White, R.E. and Dispatch Runner. Albert White, Notts & Derbys, both of whom are in France.
