Levi Sibcy was born in 1899 in Newark and was the son of the late George a labourer and Elizabeth Sibcy née Cobb of 11 Victoria Gardens, Balderton Gate, Newark. His father George Sibcy was born in 1869 at Stapleford, Lincs and died in Newark in 1912 aged 44 yrs and his mother Elizabeth Cobb born 1870 at Newark. They were married in 1887 at Newark and went on to have 13 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, John William b1889, George 1891, Sarah b1892, Mary Ann b1893, Elizabeth 1897, Samuel b1898, Levi 1899, Albert Edward b1903 and Rose b1905, In the 1911 census the family are living at 13 Cawkwells Yard, Stodman Street, Newark and are shown as Elizabeth 41 yrs married she is living with her children John William 22 yrs a pit labourer, George 21 yrs a bone sorter, Elizabeth 14 yrs, Levi 12 yrs Rose 6 yrs.
Private Levi Sibcy enlisted well under age, he was only 12 yrs of age in the 1911 census and at the time of his death was only 16 yrs old. He served with the 2/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and died of pneumonia on 15th January 1915, he is buried in Newark Cemetery.
His brother John William Sibcy also served during the Great War , he enlisted at Newark on 25th January 1912, he gave his age as 22 yrs and 9 months and his occupation as plaster pit labourer, his address was 11 Victoria Gdns, Balderton Gate Newark, he initialled served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and on 10th May 1916 he transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. On 10th January 1917 he went to Salonica and served there until 6th November 1918 when he was returned to England suffering from Malaria. He survived the war and was discharged on 22nd February 1919. Article published in the Newark Advertiser 3rd May 1916 :- Son of late George & Elizabeth Sibcy. Joined the 8th Sherwood Foresters in October 1914 and died of pneumonia at Newark Rest Home. Brothers: George Sibcy, Sherwood Foresters wounded in 1915. Pte John William Sibcy served with 4th Sherwood Foresters and Pte Samuel Sibcy, 8th Sherwood Foresters who was with their brother-in-law, Pte. Edward Mutton, at the time of his death in 1916. Another brother-in-law, Pte Samuel Bowers, York & Lancaster Regiment, was wounded in 1916 and treated at Bagthorpe Hospital.
