John William Masding was born in 1881 at Newark and was the son of the late Roberts Masding a groom and Charlotte Masding néé Reek of 39 Appleton Gate Newark. His father Robert Masding was born in 1858 at Newark, his mother Charlotte Reek was born in 1858 at Dry Doddington Lincolnshire, they were married in 1878, their marriage was recorded in the Newark Registration District, they went on to have 9 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood, their children were, Herbert b1880, John William b1881, Walter b1885, Robert b1890, Ethel b1893 and Carrie b1896 all were born in Newark. John William Masding married his wife Rosa Marsters they were married in 1904 their marriage was recorded in the Newark Registration area, they went on to have 2 children Gladys b1906 and Elveys b1909 and lived at of 16, Pelham St., Newark. In the 1911 census his parents are living at 39 Appleton Gate,Newark and are shown as Robert 53 yrs a groom, he is living with his two children, Herbert 31 yrs a tailors pressor and Ethel 18 yrs a domestic servant. His mother is not at the home address n the night of the census , but is visiting a family at Sleaford Road, Heckington, she is shown as being 53 yrs a visitor the family she is visiting is Thomas Ogden 60 yrs a farmer and his wife Betsy Ogden 60 yrs and their children. in the same 1911 census , John William and his family are visitors at 30 Purbeck Road, Bournemouth and are visiting Martin Cook 34 yrs a coachman and his wife Elizabeth Cook 36yrs , they are shown as John Masding 29 yrs a domestic chauffeur, he is with his wife Rosa 33 yrs and their children Gladys 5 yrs and Elvey 1 year 8 months.

Military History

Corporal John William Masding served with the Army Service Corps, he died on 9th September 1919 and is buried at Newark-upon-Trent Cemetery, Nottinghamshire.
