Family History

Charles Harry Aram was born in 1898 in Bulwell and was the son of Harry a coal miner and Annie Aram née Croft of 2 Hall Street, Mansfield. His father Harry was born in 1877 in Bulwell and his mother Annie Croft was born in 1878 in Etchford, Staffordshire, they were married in 1897 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 6 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were all born in Bulwell and were Charles Harry b 1898, Bruce Joseph b1889, Harry b1904 and May b1908. In the 1911 census the family are living at 48 Cavendish Street, Mansfield and are shown as Harry 34 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Annie 33 yrs and their children Charles 13 yrs a caol miner, Bruce Joseph 12 yrs a scholar, Harry 7 yrs and May 3 yrs

Military History

Private Charles Harry Aram, enlisted at Retford and served with the 1/8th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He first saw service, landing in Egypt with the 1/1st Sherwood Rangers on 27th April 1915. Later transferring to the Robin Hood Rifles, the former miner was serving with its sister battalion at the time of his death. He was killed in action on 18th April 1918 and is buried at Sailly-Labourse Communal Cemetery Extension.
