Family History

Leo was born on 14th February 1881 in Bridgton, Glasgow and was the son of of the late Thomas a tailor (died 14th November 1904 ) and Susan Anderson,(nee Irons ) of Glasgow and Edinburgh In the 1881 Scottish census he is 1 month old and living with his parents in Glasgow along with his elder siblings Bella Donaldson and Maggie Larson . By the time he is 19 years of age in 1901 he has left home and is 'in service' as a footman at the home of E E Heron Maxwell Blair at his family home in Minto, Roxburghshire, Scotland. Later he met his future wife Rachel Browett of Morcott in Rutland whom he married on 22nd September 1909 at Morcott , following his death she lived at 22,Kirke St, Retford, When he enlisted he was living at Ranby House, Babworth, Retford and he was a butler His probate record , proven at Nottingham on 27th may 1919 shows him as Leo Vincent Anderson of Ranby house Babworth a gunner in H M Army died 6th November 1918 at Rouen, France his effects of £280 13s 2d were left to his widow Rachel Anderson.

Military History

Leo enlisted at Retford on 11th August 1916 , he gave his age as 39 years and 6 months and his occupation as that of butler and his address as Ranby House, Retford, he gave his next of kin as that of his wife Rachel Anderson of Ranby House. He served with the Royal Garrison Artillery as a gunner and following his training he was to embark at Southampton on 2nd December 1916 to join the British Expeditionary Force in France, he disembarked the following day 3rd December 1916 at Le Harve. On 21st September 1918 he was wounded by a gun shot wound to his left thigh and elbow and was admitted to the military hospital in Rouen , on 5th October 1918 he became dangerously ill and eventually died on 6th November 1918 , just a week prior to the Armistice. He is buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension, grave reference S 3 S 6. Following his death his widow Rachel submitted a family form to the army stating that his father was dead and his mother Susan 79 years was living at 12 Ward Street, Glasgow and that he had 3 siblings Thomas Anderson , Margaret Anderson and Isabella Anderson

Extra Information

In letter dated 30th April 1919 from the Ministry of Pensions his wife Rachel was notified that shwe would receive a pension of 13 shiilings and 9 pence commencing 12th May 1919.
