William James Manterfield was born in 1898 at Newark and was the son of Wiliam a maltsters labourer and Ellen Manterfield née Saxby of 40a Albert Street Newark Nottinghamshire. His father William was born in 1871 at Newark and his mother Ellen Saxby was born in 1872 also in Newark, they were married in 1893 at Newark and went on to have the following children, William James b1898, Nellie b1900, George Ernest b1905 and Annie Lottie b1910 all were born in Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 40a Albert Street Newark Nottinghamshire and are shown as William 40 yrs a maltsters labourer, he is living with his wife Ellen 39 yrs and their children, William James 13 yrs a scholar, Nellie 11 yrs a scholar, George Ernest 1905 a scholar and Annie Lottie 1 year of age.
Private William James Manterfield enlisted at Newark and initially served with service number 40477 in the South Staffordshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 9th April 1917 whilst serving with the 7/8th The King's Own Scottish Borderers, he is buried at Tilloy British Cemetery Pas de Calais France Grave Reference: VII D 11
