George Henry Holmes was born in 1895 in Nottingham and was the son of Frederick a gas fitter and Jael Holmes née Sanders. His father Frederick was born in 1870 in Nottingham and his mother Jael Sanders was born in 1872 in Nottingham, they were married in 1891 in Nottingham and went on to have 4 children all born in Nottingham, they were Henry b1892, Nellie b1894, George b1895, and Fred b1899. In the 1911 census the family are living at 11 Wilford Grove Nottingham shown as Fred 41 yrs a plumber and gas fitter, he is living with his wife Jael 39 yrs and their children Henry 19 yrs a shop assistant at Boots, Nelly 17 yrs a blouse manufacturer, George 16 yrs a clerk in an engineering office and Fred 12 yrs a scholar. All three of their sons served and died during the Great War and are commemorated on the St Saviours Church war memorial in the Meadows.
Sergeant George Henry Holmes enlisted in Nottingham 18th August 1914 at Nottingham. He went to Gallipoli with the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 1st July 1915 and suffered shrapnel wounds to his right arm, 30th July 1915. He was admitted to Hospital Ship Neuralia and transferred to England on Hospital Ship Kanowna, 8th August 1915. He went to France 29th March 1916 and was appointed Lance Corporal, 25th July 1916 and promoted Corporal 9th September 1916. He was invalided to England 10th November 1916 and returned to France 27th December 1917. He suffered gunshot wounds to his neck 20th June 1918 and rejoined his battalion 9th July 1918. He was then killed in action, 24th September 1918, during the attack on Beux and Leduc trenches, near Pontruet, France and his name is commemorated on the Vis-En- Artois memorial.
His brother Pte. Fred Holmes, Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, died on 14th August 1917. he is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery and his brother Pte. Henry Holmes, 116th Company Machine Gun Corps, killed in action 8th August 1917. He is buried in Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport. In memoriam published 14th August 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HOLMES. – In loving memory of our dear sons Pte. Henry Holmes, M.G.C., died of wounds in France August 8th, 1917 Pte. Fred Holmes, Sherwood Foresters, died in hospital at Grimsby August 14th, 1917; and Sgt. Geo. Holmes, killed in action Sept. 24th, 1918.
