Family History

He was the son of Robert and Mary Ann Johnson who at the time of the 1911 Census were living with their five children, Robert (19, b. abt 1892), Dorothy (18), Mary Lilian (17), Richard (10) and William (2), at 43 Radcliffe Street, Meadows, Nottingham. His parents had been married for 20 years and had had five children born living all of whom were still living.

Military History

Formerly 2859 Notts and Derby Regiment. He died of wounds and is buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension (grave ref Special Memorial 17).

Nottingham Post obituary (abridged), 6 April 1918: ‘Johnson. Died of wounds March 24th (sic) 1918, Sgt R Johnson, Royal Warwickshire, eldest son of Mr and Mrs R Johnson, 43 Radcliffe Street, Nottingham, age 25. Mother, father, brothers. Brother of Dorothy Taylor and of Lily Williams.’
