Family History

James Henry Lane was born in 1886 at Newark and was the son of Charles William Lane born 1858 at Newark and Mary Anne Lane née Rick born 1859 Newark, they were married in 1877 and had a large family of 11 children they lived 12 Wands Row, Lovers Lane, Newark James Henry married his wife Flossy Lavinia Wingad on 28th October 1905 at Newark, they went on to have 3 children, George Henry b1906 and Harry b1910 and Horace James born 1915 (died 1915) all born in Newark the family lived at 1 Bridge Cottages, Barnby Lane, Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Bridge Cottages, Barnby Lane, Newark and are shown as James Henry 25 yrs a plaster works labourer, he is living with his wife Flossy Lavinia 24 yrs and their children, George Henry 5 yrs and Harry 1 year old.

Military History

Private James Henry Lane attested on 2nd November 1914 at Newark, he was 30 yrs of age and lived at 1 Bridge Cottage Barnby Road, Newark. He was posted to the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was discharged on 30th May 1917 as no longer fit for service due to a gun shot wound to his leg which he received during the Irish rebellion in 1916. He was awarded a Silver War Badge No 29499. He died in April 1919 and was buried in Newark-upon-Trent Cemetery, Nottinghamshire with full military honours on 23rd April 1919. He saw no service abroad.

Extra Information

He is not recorded on the cwgc or soldiers died in the Great War. Article published 30th April 1919 in the Newark Advertiser :- Resided at Bridge Cottages, Barnby Road, Newark. Served through Irish Rebellion. Invalided out of army two years ago, since then in failing health. Buried with military honours.
