George Clarence Northmore

George Clarence was born in 1897 at Yealmpton, Devon and was the son of Mark Thomas a former seaman and boatman in His Majesties Coast Guard and Harriett Elizabeth Northmore née Ednacott His father Mark was born in 1869 in Plymouth, his mother Harriett Elizabeth Endacott was born in 1870 in Plymouth, they were married in 1894 in Plymouth and went on to have 5 children however sadly 1 died in infancy prior to 1911 , their children were William Francis b1887, Mark b1890, George Clarence b 1897 and Ivy b1903. His father Mark was in the Royal Navy and served from 28th March 1883 , in the 1901 census he is shown as a boatman in His Majesties Coastguard , he and his young family at that time are living at 10 Coast Guard Cottages, Devonport. His brother Mark born 24th January 1890 at Plymouth joined the Royal Navy and signed on for 12 yrs on his 18th birthday on 24th January 1908. He left the service in February 1914. In 1911 the family were living at 14 Northcote Terrace, Kirkwhite Street, Meadows, Nottingham and are shown as Mark Thomas 42 yrs head of the family a Naval pensioner and lift attendant at an insurance company, he is living with his wife Harriett 41yrs and his two children George Clarence 14 yrs an apprentice iron moulder, and Ivy 8 yrs. His brother William Francis Northmore was killed in action 25/9/1915 whilst serving with the 8th battalion Devonshire Regiment. The family were to be devastated within two weeks, between 25th September and 5th October 1915 two of their sons were to pay the ultimate sacrifice and were killed in action on the Western Front.
