John was born in 1889 in Leicester and was the son of the late Thomas Lawrence Dowling and Elizabeth Dowling, of 15 Cromford Street, Nottingham. 1901:Mother, Elizabeth age 47, a widow. Military History

Private John Lawrence Dowling, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 20th Battalion Royal Fusiliers. He landed in France on 14th November 1915 and was killed in action on 5th November 1916. He is buried in Guards' Cemetery, Lesboeufs. (grave ref Vlll.Z.1)
