Family History

He was the son of Thomas, a railway watchman born at Hackney London in 1857 and Sarah Ann Donelly born 1845 in Leicestershire. He was the brother of Annie and Walter Donelly who were born at Nottingham and the step brother of Joseph Cowlishaw who was born at Pye Bridge Derbyshire. In 1901 and 1911 the family lived at 67 King’s Meadow Road Meadows Nottingham. Joseph had left by then and Arthur was serving a sentence at Rochester Borstal in Kent (offence unknown).

Military History

4th Infantry Labour Company He enlisted at Leeds. He died of wounds in hospital at Wimereux and was buried at Wimereux Communal Cemetery.

Nottingham Evening Post 15/06/1914 When Arthur Donnelly (sic) 24 of no residence, was charged at the Nottingham Police Court today with stealing a bicycle, value £2. It was stated that the machine, which belonged to Cecil George Armstrong, was taken from Kings Walk on June 13th, and that on Saturday last prisoner surrendered himself and the machine to the Leicester Borough Police. When charged by DS Powdrill he replied ‘I stole it from Kings Walk’ A remand was ordered. Nottingham Evening Post 22/06/1914 His tyre puncturing while riding a stolen bicycle to Belgrave, Leicester Arthur Donnelly (sic) 24 a labourer of no settled residence, surrendered to Leicestershire police and as a result was brought up at the Nottingham Guildhall today charged with stealing the machine from Cecil George Armstrong, a clerk of Carlton. Prosecutor left it outside an office in King's Walk and when he returned it had gone. Later prisoner was taken into custody by D.S. Powdrill to whom he told the story of the punctured tyre. He was sent to prison for 2 months. CWGC incorrectly cites age 30. He was born J/F/M/1890.
