Family History

He was the son of Edmund and Millicent Gascoyne of Hougham and the brother of George, Edmund and Richard Gascoyne. Edmund Gascoyne became William's sole legatee. In 1911 Edmund lived with his wife Florence Elizabeth and children John Thomas Brackenbury and Edward Lambert Gascoyne at 25 Atlas Terrace Kirkwhite Street East Meadows Nottingham. It is probable that William lodged with the family at some point which would explain his inclusion on St Saviour's memorial.

Military History

He enlisted at Newark and served first in Gallipoli arriving 21/11/1915. The battalion was evacuated to Egypt in January 1916 and moved to France in July 1916. He died in Eastbourne Central Hospital.

Extra Information

CWGC incorrectly cites William's age as 44. His birth was registered J/F/M/1876. Eastbourne (Ocklynge) Cemetery Grave Reference: Z. 544.
