Ernest was born in 1896 the son of William, a coachman, and Mary Ann Calvert (née Fletcher). His parents were both born in 1868 at Flaxton, Yorkshire. They were married in 1894 in the York Registration District. His father died in 1908 in Nottingham aged forty. In 1901, they lived at 233 Main Street, Kimberley. They had two lodgers – Samuel Adams a brewery clerk and Frederick Allen a railway clerk. By 1911, the family lived at 78 Turney Street, Meadows, Nottingham.
Ernest Calvert enlisted at Nottingham and served with 'B' Battery. Oulchy- Le Cateau Churchyard Extension Grave Reference: II D 1 He was Mentioned in Despatches - 'London Gazette,' 18th May 1917.
In memoriam published 31st July 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CALVERT. – In ever-loving memory of my dear son, Cpl. Ernest Calvert, who died for his country on July 31st, 1918.
