Family History

Alfred was born about 1882, the son of John Thomas (Thomas) and Ann/Annie (Eliza Ann/Liza Ann) Slack. Alfred's father was born in Smithy Moor, Derbyshire, and was a miner for most of his working life; his mother was born in Eastwood. In 1911 his parents gave the information on the census that they had been married for 41 years and had had seven children of whom only five had survived. However, eight children were named on the census between 1881 and 1911: Mary, William, Elizabeth, Thomas, Joseph, Alfred, Walter and George. In 1881, the year before Alfred's birth, Thomas and Ann were living at 40 Kings Meadow Road, Meadows, Nottingham, with their five children; Mary A, William, Elizabeth, Thomas and Joseph. By 1891 they had moved to 30 Kings Meadow Road; their five oldest children and their three younger siblings, Alfred, Walter and George (3). The family was still living at the same address in 1901 but only four children were at home; Elizabeth, Joseph, Alfred and Walter. Thomas and Ann also had a boarder, the widowed Sarah Stover (61 b. Smithy Moor). Thomas and Ann had moved to 10 Cromford Street, Nottingham, by 1911; he was now a night watchman and her occupation was described as 'greengrocery shop', although it is not clear whether their residence was 'above the shop'. Only Joseph and Alfred were in the home on the night of the census.
