Father: Reuben Wheatley, born in 1858 at Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, working as a police constable. Mother: Elizabeth Wheatley, born in 1854 at Biggleswade. Brothers: Albert, born in 1881 in Lenton, Nottingham, working as a lace draughtsman, Robert Charles, born in 1885 at Nottingham, working as a corporation labourer, Clifford, born in 189 in Nottingham, working as a railway carriage cleaner,Sisters: Minnie, born in 1880 at Lenton, Nottingham, working as a frilling machinist, Ada, born in 1883 in Lenton, working as a frilling machinist and Ethel Elizabeth, born in 1892 in Nottingham, working as a frilling machinist. The family lived at 9 Branch Street, Meadow Lane, Nottingham. Reuben and Elizabeth moved at some point to Peter's Row, Nottingham Road, Daybrook.
Private Reuben Wheatley, served with the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment) He landed in France on 4th November 1914 and was killed in action on 9th May 1915. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on Ploegsteert Memorial..
His brother, Boy 1st Class Vincent Wheatley, was killed on 26 November 1914 while serving in HMS Bulwark; the ship was destroyed by an ammunition explosion while at a buoy off Sheerness. Reuben's address at the time he was killed was Ryehill Cottages, Kirkewhite Street (obituary)Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged), 9 June 1915: 'Pte R Wheatley, 1st Sherwood Foresters, 19 Ryehill Cottages, Kirkewhite Street, Nottingham, killed in action May 9th.' In memoriam published 9th May 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WHEATLEY. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Reuben Wheatley, Sherwoods, killed in action May 9th, 1915.
