Thomas Gregory Chambers was born in 1884 he was the son of John Chambers a gas works labourer and Clara Chambers née Gregory of 70 Taylor Street, Osmaston, Derby. John was born in 1846 at Elvaston, Clara Gregory was born in 1852 at Kings Newton, Derbyshire, they were married on 20th February 1873 at Boulton, Derbyshire they went on to have 10 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 his parents were living at 70 Taylor Street, Osmanton John is 65 yrs a gas works labourer he is living with his wife Clara 62 yrs and two of their children, John Gregory 36 yrs an iron worker and George 19 yrs also an iron worker He was one of six brothers to enlist and the third to be killed. At the time of his death the surviving three were all in the trenches. Thomas married Gertrude Shaw (born 22nd September 1884) in 1906 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at 8 Albert Street, Eastwood, they had the following children, Clara Ann born 9th May 1907, John Stanley born 30th April 1908, Maria born 24th August 1910 and Gertrude Ivy born 1st June 1914. Commencing 13th March 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 6 pence a week. His widow re married in 1902 to William Callaway.
Private Thomas Gregory Chambers enlisted at Leicester, he was a Reservist, and was wounded in fighting around Hill 60 near Ypres in May 1915 and died a POW in German custody on 8th May 1915. His family remained unaware of Chambers' fate for nine months. His name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial.
His brothers John Gregory Chambers 16th battalion Cheshire Regiment died on 26th August 1916, he is buried at Londonthorpe, Grantham (St. John the Baptist) Churchyard and Quarter Master Sergeant Peter Gregory Chambers ( Royal Scots Fusiliers ) of Loughborough died 2nd November 1914 and is buried at Wimereux Communal Cemetery.
