William Cartledge (junior) was born in 1899 at Langley Mill he was the son of William Cartledge (senior) a coal miner hewer and Mary Ellen Cartledge née Burgin of 50 Broxholme Lane Wheatley Doncaster. William Cartledge (senior) was born in 1877 , Mary Ellen Burgin was born in 1876, both were born in Langley Mill, they were married on 26th December 1896 at Aldecar, Derbyshire they had 6 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 15 Queen Street, Langley Mill, William is 34 yrs he is living with his wife Mary Ellen 35 yrs and their 5 children including William 12 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private William Cartledge enlisted at Doncaster and served with 8th battalion Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). He was killed in action on 24th June 1918 and is buried at La Kreule Military Cemetery, Hazebrouck, France.
