Family History

John Percy Clarke was baptised on 9th April 1890 at the parish church in Heanor he was the son of John Clarke a boot & shoe maker and Elizabeth Clarke née Bond of 75 Nottingham Road, Eastwood. John was born in 1858 at South Normanton, Elizabeth Bond was born in 1861 at Codnor Park, they were married in 1880 their marriage was recorded in the Chesterfield registration district. They went on to have 10 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 75 Nottingham Road, Eastwood, John 53 yrs is a boot maker, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 50 yrs and 5 of their children. In 1911 John Percy has left the family home, he is living at Nags Head Cottage, Pleasley, he is shown as being Percy John Clarke 22 yrs , single and an assistant butcher, he is living with William Thorpe 43 yrs a butcher and his family. John Percy married Mary Elizabeth Townsend (born 15th May 1896) in 1915 their marriage was recorded in the Grantham registration district. His widow went on to remarry on 23rd October 1915 to William Holland and become Mary Holland who lived at Orchard House, Whatton she did not receive a pension as she re married prior to the pension being awarded.

Military History

Private John Percy Clarke, enlisted at Mansfield and served with the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he was killed in action at Suvla on 9th August 1915 in the attack at Ismail Oglu Tepe, (Chocolate Hill), Gallipoli, Turkey. He has no known grave his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli.
