Family History

William Henry Cooper was born in 1888 he was the son of Henry Worrall Cooper a safety lamp cleaner and Mary Ann Cooper née Brown of Shell Cottage Church Street Eastwood Nottinghamshire. Henry Worrall was born in 1862 at Eastwood Mary Ann Brown waas born in 1865 at Belper, they were married in 1888 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 15 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at 61 Shell Cottage , Church Street, Eastwood, Henry is 49 yrs and is a safety lamp cleaner, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 46 yrs and 11 of their children including William Henry 22 yrs a coal miner hewer

Military History

Rifleman William Henry Cooper enlisted at Nottingham. He joined his unit on 2/1/1915 after training at Winchester and later at Sheerness. Initially posted wounded, he was killed in fierce fighting east of Ypres on 9th May 1915. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
