Family History

Ernest Fletcher was born in 1893 at Eastwood he was the son of Joseph a coal miner contractor and Rachel Fletcher née Carr of the Great Northern Hotel Eastwood Nottinghamshire. Joseph was born in 1860 at Langley Mill Rachel Carr was born in 1859 at Cotmanhay, they were married on 22nd January 1883 at Kirk Hallam, they had 7 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 12 Northern Road, Bailey Grove, Langley Mill, Joseph 51 yrs is a coal miner contractor, he is living with his wife Rachel 52 yrs and their children including Ernest 17 yrs a shop keeper.

Military History

Private Ernest Fletcher enlisted or was conscripted in early March 1916 at Hucknall and trained at Hexham, Newcastle, York and Strensall. He was a stretcher bearer and seems to have suffered a seizure while under heavy shell fire (see letter from an officer) and died on 3rd October 1916. He was buried by his unit but the grave was later lost and he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
