Family History

Horace Cowell was born in 1892 he was baptised on 26th July 1899 at St Pauls Church, Morley he was the son of Robert Charles Cowell a labourer and Susan Ann Cowell née Larmett of 46 Church Street Eastwood Nottinghamshire. Robert Charles was born in 1859 at Heyden, Essex, Susan Ann Larmett was born in 1866 at Whaplode Drove, Lincolnshire, they were married on 17th September 1883 at All Saints Church, Batley. they went on to have 9 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 his father and siblings were living at 52 Church Street, Eastwood, Robert 52 yrs is a labourer he is living with 4 of his children. In 1911 his mother Susan is living at 22 Providence Place, Morley she is 42 yrs and is a house keeper for Alfred Bower, a colliery labourer.

Military History

Sapper Horace Cowell enlisted at Nottingham in September 1915 and landed in France on 14th September 1915. He was killed by a shell fragment 'whilst proceeding to the firing line' (Eastwood & Kimberley Advertiser 28/7/1916) on 16th July 1916 and is buried at Sucrerie Military Cemetery, Colincamps, France.
