Family History

Herbert Isiah Eyre was born in 1876 he was the son of Samuel a blacksmith Herbert married Sarah Elizabeth Slater (born 1st March 1872) on 30th July 1907 at St Mary's Church, Eastwood, they lived at 17 Derby Road, Langley Mill, they had a daughter Muriel Eda born 31st July 1905. In 1911 the family are living at 17 Derby Road, Eastwood, Herbert Isiah Eyre is 35 yrs and is a coal miner contractor, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 40 yrs and their daughter Muriel Edna 5 years. Commencing 16th October 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 17 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military History

Private Herbert Isa Eyre enlisted on 10th March 1915 in Derby whilst residing at Langley Mill, giving his age as 38 years, he was a coal miner he served with the 1/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He embarked from Southampton on 10th November 1915 landing at Rouen the following day. He was wounded on 25th March 1916 , a gun shot wound to his left thigh and abdomen and admitted to the field hospital. He died from his wounds at the 30th casualty clearing station on 27th March 1916 and is buried at Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension.
