Family History

George was born in 1889 in Flintham and was the son of John a police constable and Elizabeth. His father John was born in 1864 in Hucknall and his mother Elizabeth was born in 1863 in Woolsthorpe Lincolnshire, they had three other children , Fred b1892 Penistone, Yorks, John b1894 Eastwood and Jesse b1901 Selston. In the 1901 census the family are living at Selston and are shown as John 37 yrs a police constable, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 38 yrs and their children George 12 yrs, Fred 9 yrs, John 7 yrs and Jesse 1 month old. In the 1911 census we find George living in India, he is with the 63 battery Royal Field Artillery in barracks in India , he is 22 yrs of age , single and a gunner. The commonwealth wargraves commission gives his father John's address as of 68 Lenton Boulevard, Nottingham.

Military History

George Newstead enlisted in Nottingham as a career soldier. In 1911 he was serving in India. He landed in Mesopotamia on 17th November 1914. He was captured at Kut on 29th April 1916 and died as a prisoner of war in Turkey on 29th August 1916. He is buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery.
