Family History

William Newton was born in 1882 at Eastwood he was the son of the late Charles a coal miner hewer and Mary Newton née Marriott of 23 Nottingham Road, Eastwood. Charles was born in 1851 at Awsworth, he died in 1899 aged 48 yrs, Mary Marriott was born in 1858 at Eastwood, they were married n 1874 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 8 children. In 1911 his widowed mother Mary 53 yrs is living at 23 Nottingham Road, Eastwood with 5 of her children including William 29 yrs , single he is a coal miner hewer.

Military History

Corporal William Newton enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Eastwood he served with the 12th battalion The Rifle Brigade. He died of wounds received in action on 20 September 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium (Panel 145-147).
