Family History

Frank Haywood Riley was baptised Francis Haywood Riley on 27th March 1895 at the parish church, Riddings Derbyshire, he was the son of Henry Riley a coal miner and his first wife Elizabeth Haywood Riley née Slater of Eastwood Nottinghamshire. Henry was born in 1867 at Codnor, Elizabeth Haywood Slater was born in 1868 she died in 1899 aged 31 yrs they were married on 27th March 1895 at the Riddings Parish Church. His father re married Harriett Rowe Brown in 1901 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district. In 1911 the family are living at 87 Princess Street, Eastwood, and are shown as Henry Riley 44 yrs a coal miner contractor, he is living with his second wife Harriett Rowe (married 12 yrs) and their children, William Brown, David Brown, John Brown and Harriett Brown 22 yrs and also Francis Riley 16 yrs a coal miner loader and Clarence Riley 14 yrs.

Military History

Gunner Frank Riley enlisted at Nottingham, he was Eastwood's first volunteer in August 1914 and saw action with 'C' Battery, 62nd Brigade Royal Field Artillery at Loos, the Somme and the Ancre. He died from shrapnel wounds to the abdomen and back on 2nd May 1917. He is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery grave reference XIX,N.13A
