Family History

Fred Bower was baptised on 30th March 1890 at St Mary's Church, Eastwood he was the son of John a coal miner and Elizabeth Bower née Hatton of Eastwood Nottingham. John was born in 1847 at Eastwood, Elizabeth Hatton was born in 1852 at Greasley, they were married on 17th October 1870 at Greasley, they went on to have 19 children, sadly 8 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 30 Princess Street, Eastwood, John 64 yrs is a coal miner 9retired) he is living with hgis wife Elizabeth 59 yrs and two of their children, Fred 21 yrs a coal miner and Wallace 16 yrs a coal miner.

Military History

Private Fred Bower enlisted at Derby on 1st September 1914 serving initially with the infantry before transferring to a transport section. He died on 9th November 1917 at 47th Casualty Clearing Station from abdominal injuries sustained in a collision with a lorry and is buried at Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 15. Row B.
