Thomas Johnson was born in 1884 at Newark and was the son of the late George Edward a drayman and Sarah Johnson née Taylor of 2 Pleasant Place, Cherryholt Lane, Newark. His father George Edward Johnson was born in 1839 at Coddington and died in 1894 at Newark aged 55 yrs, his mother Sarah Taylor was born in 1839 at Egmanton, they were married in 1861 at Newark and went on to have the following children, Harriett b1871 Coddington, Alice b1877 Newark George b1878, Egmanton, and Thomas b1884 Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Leach Buildings, Boundary Road, Newark and are shown as Sarah Johnson 70 yrs a widow, she is living with her children Alice 34 yrs a factory folder and Thomas 27 yrs a labourer
Private Thomas Johnson enlisted on 12th September 1914 at Newark, he was 31 yrs and 125 days old and a labourer. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and served on the home front until 29th August 1915 when he landed in France, he served until 1st October 1915 when he returned to England. He went back to the Western Front on 3rd August 1916 and served there until 17th March 1917 when he was again returned to England. On 24th May 1917 he appeared before amedical board which found him no longer physically fit for war service due to results of a gun shot wound to his chest which he received on 1st January 1917 in France. He was discharged from the Army on 14th June 1917 his address was 2 Pleasant Place, Cherry Holt Lane, Newark. He was awarded a silver war badge number 158242. He died on 21st July 1919 at Newark and is buried in Newark Town Cemetery.
