Family History

William Leslie Shaw was born in 1890 he was the son of Herbert Shaw a sawyer and the late Anne Shaw, née Carlin of 25 Princess Street, Eastwood. Herbert Shaw was born in 1850, Annie Carlin was born in 1849 they were both born in Eastwood, Ann died in 1903 aged 54 yrs, they had 13 children, sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 25 Princes Street Eastwood Nottinghamshire, Herbert 61 yrs is a sawyer and a widow, he is living with his children, William Leslie 21 yrs a coal miner and Rose Ethel 19 yrs a tailoress. William married Jane Clarke (born 15th March 1889) in 1911 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at 11 Bridge Street, Langley Mill they had 2 children, Elizabeth Ann born 24th October 1912 and William Herbert born 17th November 1914. Commencing 17th December 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week.

Military History

Lance Corporal William Leslie Shaw enlisted at Ilkeston he served with the 10th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 2nd June 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Panels 8 and 12, Ypres, Belgium
