John Smith was born in 1888 at Rempstone, he was baptised on 21st October 1888 at Rempstone parish church, he was the son of George Charles Smith a labourer for the Derwent Valley water board and Emma Smith née Watson of 10 Phyllis Grove, Long Eaton. George Charles was born in 1863 at Costock, Emma Watson was born in 1865 at Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, they were married on 17th May 1886 at Colsterworth parish church, Lincolnshire, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood all were born at Rempstone. In 1911 the family lived at 10 Phyllis Grove, Long Eaton, George Charles is 48 yrs and a labourer, he is living with his wife Emma 46 yrs and 8 of their children. John married Lottie Carlin (born 29th September 1886) in 1910 their married was registered in the Basford registration district, they lived at 12 Queen Street, Eastwood. Commencing 6th June 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and 9 pence aweek.

Military History

Private John Smith enlisted at Woolwich and served with 1st battalion Royal Bekshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 23rd March 1918 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
