Family History

Joseph Smitheringale was born in 1889 he was the son of the late Joseph a coal miner hewer and Annie Maria Smitheringale née Clifton of Princes Street, Eastwood. Joseph was born in 1855 at West Deeling, Lincolnshire, he died in 1915 aged aged 60 yrs, Annie Maria Clifton was born 1860 at Beauvale, Nottinghamshire, they were married on 27th December 1879 at Holy Trinity Church, Kimberley they had 14 children, sadly three died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at Princess Street, Eastwood, Joseph is 55 yrs and is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Annie Maria 51 yrs and 8 of their children including Joseph Henry 22 yrs a coal miner hewer. Joseph married Liley Cooper in 1912 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at 9 Dukes Place, Church Street, Cotmanhay, Derbyshire. Two brother also served , one with the Canadians and the other with the Royal Field Artillery.

Military History

Rifleman Joseph Henry Smitheringale enlisted in Nottingham on 10th September 1914 giving his age as 25 years and 178 days, he was a collier. He served with the 12th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. He landed in France on 23rd July 1915. He died from pneumonia on 26th November 1918 at the 34th Casualty Clearing Station after the Armistice and is buried in Solesmes British Cemetery, Nord, France (I.D.18).
