Family History

Ezra Oliver Starbuck was born in 1894 at Eastwood and was the son of William a colliery winding engine driver and Sarah Starbuck née Insul of 27 Main Street, New Eastwood Nottinghamshire. His father William was born in 1871 at Burton upon Trent, his mother Sarah Insul was born in 1873 at Brockmer, Staffordshire, they were married in 1890 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 10 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their children were, Harold Insul b1890, William Clarence b1892, Ezra Oliver b1894, Elsie May b1896, Louisa b1901, Florence b1906, Millicent b1908 and Albert b1911 all were born at Eastwood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 27 Main Street, New Eastwood and are shown as William 40 yrs a colliery winding engine driver, he is living with his wife Sarah 38 yrs and their children, Harold Insul 21 yrs a coal miner, William Clarence 19 yrs a coal miner, Ezra Oliver 17 yrs a coal miner, Elsie May 15 yrs working at home, Elizabeth Ellen 12 yrs a scholar, Louisa 10 yrs a scholar, Florence 5 yrs, Millicent 3 yrs and Albert 2 months old.

Military History

Lance Corporal Ezra Oliver Strarbuck served as Oliver Starbuck he enlisted at Ilkeston and he served with 2nd battalion Leicestershire Regiment first in France and later with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. He was killed in action in Mesopotamia on 13th January 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq panel 12.
