Family History

Thomas William Start was born in 1893 he was the son of Amos a colliery banksman and Harriet Start née Riley of 15 Wellington Place Eastwood Nottinghamshire. Amos was born in 1860 at Ruddington, Harriet Riley was born in 1870 at Eastwood, they were married on 2nd November 1891 at St Mary's Church, Eastwood, Harriett brought a child to the marriage Eliza Riley born in 1881 at Eastwood, they had 3 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 15 Wellington Place, Eastwood, Amos is 51 yrs and a pit banksman, he is living with his wife Harriett 41 yrs and her daughter Eliza Riley 20 yrs and son Thomas William 18 yrs of age he is a pottery worker.

Military History

Private Thomas William Start enlisted at Derby in May 1916 and was drafted to France initially with the North Staffordshire Regiment before transferring to 1st Battalion East Lancashire Regiment. He was killed in action on 4th October 1917 having no known memorial his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium
