Family History

Ernest Alfred was born in 1893 at Pyebridge, Derbyshire and lived at Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. He was the son of the late Edwin a railway signalman and Fanny Blagg, née Williamson of 11 Bridge Road, Eastwood. Edwin was born in 1865 at Ordsall he died in 1910 aged 45 yrs, Fanny Williamson was born in 1868 at Eastwood, they were married on 28th August 1889 at St Mary's Church, Eastwood, they went on to have 15 children, sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 16 Jack's Yard, Eastwood, Fanny 43 yrs is a widow, she is living with 9 of her children including Ernest 17 yrs a coal miner

Military History

Private Ernest Alfred Blagg enlisted at Nottingham. He served in Gallipoli during 1915 with the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He went to France and was transferred to the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and was killed in action, 31st July 1917, in the attack at Steenbeek, Belgium. Having no know grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. Panel 39 and 41.
