John Richard Long was born in 1897 in Newark and was the son of Francis William a blacksmith and Jessie Barnet Long née Hill. His father Francis William was born in 1874 in Harmston, Lincolnshire and his mother Jessie Barnett Hill was born in 1874 in Scothern, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1896 in the Lincolnshire area , they had 3 children , sadly 1 died in infancy prior to 1911 , their other surviving child was Elsie Barnett Long b 1904 in West Bridgford. In the 1911 census the family are living at Owmby by Spital, Lincolnshire and are shown as Francis William Long 37 yrs a blacksmith , he is living with his wife Jessie Barnett 37 years and their children John Richard 13 yrs and Elsie Barnett 7 yrs At the time of his death his family were living at 3 Midland Cottages, West Bridgford.
Corporal John Richard Long, M.M. enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1st Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. He landed in France on 8th April 1915, he died of wounds on 29th April 1917 and is buried in Anzin-St. Aubin British Cemetery grave reference I C 10 The award of his Military Medal was announced in the London Gazette on 12th July 1917 and was awarded on 5.1.1917, for operations on the Somme during the famous battle August to November 1916.
In memoriam published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 12th July 1917:- LONG. – In loving memory of Corpl. John Richard Long, K.R.R., who died of wounds April 29th, 1917.
