He was known as 'Jack'. He was born about 1892, the son of John and Mary Anne Nicholson who had two older children, Annie Elizabeth and Arthur, who had both been born in Brigg, Lincolnshire. In 1901, when John Thomas was 9, the family was living at 16 Launder Street, Meadows. By 1911 John was living with his parents and sister at 46 Mayfield Grove, Meadows; Arthur had married in 1909 and left home. Two boarders, John Vernon and Annie Elizabeth Hines, also shared the home. At the time of John's death his parents were living at 31 Kinglake Street, Meadows, Nottingham, although they later moved to 75 Broomhill Road, Bulwell. John's brother, Arthur, who was a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery, died of pneumonia in Bagthorpe Military Hospital, Nottingham, on 13 January 1919.
His army service record survives. He attested on 2 September 1914 at the age of 22 years and 5 months, and was posted the same day. He served at home until 3 March 1915 but served in France from 4 March. He died of wounds on 2 May 1915 in 13 Stationary Hospital, Boulogne, and is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery (grave ref. Vlll.B.14). He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Died of wounds, Boulogne Hospital, May 2nd Private JT (Jack) Nicholson, aged 23 years, 4th King's Liverpool, son of J and A Nicholson, 31 Kinglake Street.' Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 15 January 1919: 'Nicholson. Gunner Arthur Nicholson, RFA, husband of Edith, died January 13th of pneumonia at Berridge Road Military Hospital, age 20, 61 Collygate Road. General cemetery. Only son of Mr and Mrs Nicholson, 31 Kinglake Street. His brother, Jack, died of wounds 1915. Mother father, sister Lizzie [Annie Elizabeth] and Ernest [son in law, m. 1912].' Soldiers' Effects: His father, John, was his sole legatee.
