Family History

Edwin Hirst was baptised on 21st October 1896 in St George’s Church, Barnsley. He was the son of William a mechanic and Ada Ann Hirst née Bielby. William was born in 1871 at Wakefield, Ada Ann Bielby in 1872 at Mexborough. Married on 28th January 1894, they had three children - Doris b.1894 Arthur b.1895, and Edwin b.1896. In 1901 they lived at 1, Rupert Grove and later 96, Queen's Walk (both Meadows Nottingham).

Military History

Edwin Hirst enlisted in Nottingham and landed in France on 3rd August 1915. Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

In memoriam published 15th December 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HIRST. – In loving memory of my dear son, Rifleman Edwin Hirst, K.R.R., killed December 15th, 1915. We miss him and mourn him in silence unseen. – From his sorrowing father, mother brother, sister, and fiancée.” In memoriam published 15th December 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HIRST. – In loving memory of our dear son, Riflmn. Edwin Hirst, K..R., killed in action December 15th, 1915.
