He was the son of George and Eliza Henley and the brother of Walter, Herbert (killed in action 30/7/1918) and Arthur (killed in action 8/7/1916) Henley. In 1901 they lived on High Street, Little Brickhill, Buckinghamshire. In 1911, he was serving with 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment in Aden.
