He married his wife Eliza Hall (married O/N/D/1905) and they lived at 12 Hatley Terrace, Castleton Street, Meadows, Nottingham and went on to have 3 children all born Nottingham, Olive b1913, Rose b1914 and Samuel B1916 Following his death his widow was granted a pension of 26 shillings and 3 pence a week for her and her children to take effect from 18th February 1918
Private William Ewart Smedley, enlisted in Derby on 10th March 1915, he gave his age as 30 yrs and 156 days, his address as 44 Westwick Street, Ilkeston and his next of kin as his wife Eliza of the same address. He was posted to the 3/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment on 26th March 1915. He embarked from Southampton on 12th October 1915 landing the following day at Rouen. He was wounded in action on 1st July 1916, a gun shot wound to his back and was admitted to No2 General Hospital. On 3rd July he was transferred back to England for treatment. Having recovered from his wounds he went back once more to France, embarking on 24th May 1917. On 18th June 1917 he was posted to the 1st battalion, Sherwood Foresters, and on 3rd August 1917 was once again wounded in action, a gun shot wound to his thigh and abdomen. He was admitted to 10th Casualty clearing station and then onto the 7th Canadian General Hospital where on 12th August 1917 he died of his wounds. He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery
