Ernest Waterfield was born on 11th April 1896 in Nottingham and was the son of Arthur, a lace dipper, and Eliza Wakefield née Blatherwick of 45 Cremorne Street, Nottingham His father Arthur was born in 1873 in Nottingham and his mother Eliza Blatherwick was born in 1872 also in Nottingham, they went on to marry in 1894 in Nottingham, they went on to have 8 children, sadly 1 died in infancy, Their surviving children were: Ernest b1897, Ethel b1899, Lizzie b1901, Albert b1903, Fred b1905, Ivy b1908, and Arthur b1910; all the children were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 45 Cremorne Street, Nottingham, Arthur is 38 yrs a lace dipper; he is living with his wife Eliza 39 yrs and their 7 children. Ernest married his wife Annie Kendall in 1916 in Nottingham; they lived at 167, Kirkewhite Street, Nottingham.
Private Ernest Waterfield, enlisted in Nottingham on 31st October 1914. He was 19 yrs and 7 months old, his address was 171 Kirkwhite Street, Nottingham. He served with the Sherwood Foresters but was discharged on 23rd November 1914 under Kings Regulations 156 paragraph 4. He was later to serve with the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment. He landed in France on 3rd May 1915; he was taken prisoner on 1st September 1917 and died of wounds in captivity on 16th October 1917. He is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery. (grave ref X.C.2).
Nottingham Post obituary (abridged), 1 December 1917: 'Waterfield. Died of sickness, October 16th 1917, at Dulmen, Germany, Ernest, Sherwood Foresters, husband of Annie Waterfield, (21 or 121) Kirke White Street. Wife. Eldest son of Mr and Mrs A Waterfield, 171 Kirkwhite Street. Mother, father, sisters, brothers.' Obituaries posted 1st December 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WATERFIELD. – Died of sickness, October 16th, 1917, at Dulmen, Germany, Ernest (Sherwood Foresters), dearly beloved husband of Annie Waterfield, 121, Kirke White-street, His welcome smile, his dear sweet face, never on earth can be replaced. – From his sorrowing wife, mother, father-in-law, and family. “WATERFIELD. – Died of sickness, October 16th, 1917, at Dulmen, Germany, Private Ernest Waterfield, Sherwood Foresters, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Waterfield, 171, Kirke White-street.
